What to Look for When Choosing a Central Air System

When the weather starts to get hot, air conditioning companies get very busy. Many people wait too long to test their central air system. Then all of a sudden, it is ninety degrees outside and the house is not cooling off like it use to.

Find out what the SEER rating is. That stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating. The higher the rating, the lower the cost of running the unit is. Another important point to look at is the cooling capacity. This is measured in tons. If your house is well insulated then one ton for every thousand square feet is a good number to go on. If your house is not well insulated then one ton for every four hundred square feet is good to go with.

Another point to consider when choosing a central air system is how much sunlight hits the house and is the house shaded by trees. A study by a well-known university concluded that a smaller unit is more efficient at cooling a home and removing moisture than an oversized unit is.

Another way to save on energy costs and not have your central air system working overtime is to install double pane windows and install a fan in the attic to blow hot air out of the home.

The air intake on your furnace should feature a good clean filter. If your filter is dirty, you will end up with an unreliable system. Choosing a central air system is not difficult as long as you understand what is available and what is good at saving energy costs.
